Hypnosis for Public SpeakingMany people want to know,
"can hypnosis help me conquer my fear of public
speaking?"
The answer to that is a resounding "yes," hypnosis is a
proven method for overcoming stage fright.
Then the same people ask,
"Can anyone be hypnotized?"
Well, that's a little tougher to answer. Can anyone be
hypnotized? Yes, as a matter of fact, most people who think
they can't be hypnotized are hypnotized every day.
You see, hypnosis is really just a deep state of
concentration. And, know it or not, many people get lightly
hypnotized when they get deeply involved in a book or other
activity. Their concentration is such that they lose track of
time and lose awareness of their surroundings.
Many people also "lose themselves" while daydreaming, again
going into a light trance state.
So, getting back to the question, "can anyone be
hypnotized," the answer is yes, but that doesn't mean that all
hypnotists will be equally effective. You may not click with a
certain hypnotist, or that hypnotist may not use the language
that is the most powerful for you. And, some hypnotist's method
of induction may be a better fit than some other hypnotist's
methods.
So, when seeking out hypnosis for your fear of public
speaking, it's good to find the person who's the best fit for
you.
How does hypnosis work?
Hypnosis works by helping to quiet your mind, so that
suggestions are more easily accepted. It all has to do with
brain waves, and when you go into a hypnotic trance you shift
from a beta state, where your brain waves operate at 14 - 30
cycles per second (cps) to an alpha state at 8-13 cps, then
perhaps deeper into theta state at 4-7 cps.
It's at the alpha-theta and theta states where your
subconscious mind reigns supreme. And, your subconscious mind
isn't critical or logical like your conscious mind; it also
doesn't distinguish between reality and fantasy.
So, when you're in a trance and the hypnotist helps you
visualize yourself onstage and having a very successful
presentation, your subconscious takes that in as reality,
helping you gain a positive experience. And, having a positive
speaking experience is what you need to help you overcome your
fears.
Is It Really That
Simple?
Yes, as simple as it sounds, hypnosis is a powerful tool to
help you overcome your fear of public speaking. It's what many
top athletes use to help them become better athletes. It's what
some patients use to help lower their blood pressure or cope
with the symptoms of such illnesses as IBS. It's what many
highly suggestible people use instead of anesthesia for dental
work.
What about Hypnosis
CDs?
Hypnosis CDs are a cost-effective way to get hypnotized. The
problem is they're not personalized. They tend to be
generic.
Now, that may not be a big problem, and many people are aided
by hypnosis tapes and CDs. But, if you have access to a
qualified hypnotherapist, it is better to go in person. That
way the hypnotherapist can listen to your words and use those
words in suggestions while you're in trance. Using a person's
words back to them can be a very powerful way to give
suggestions. But, in the absence of a qualified hypnotherapist
in your area, you might try a hypnosis CD.
How Do I Find a
Qualified Hypnotherapist?
This can be a little tricky. Depending on where you live,
hypnotherapists may not be regulated, meaning any person can
take a weekend seminar and be certified as a
hypnotherapist.
Be sure to ask the hypnotherapist what training he or she
has undertaken. The hypnotherapist may also be a licensed
psychotherapist, but do ask the extent of their hypnosis
training. Some training programs last a weekend, while some
last for months. The Hypnosis Motivation Institute in Tarzana,
California has a year-long training program.
